In the realm of Melromarc, a group of ordinary men from modern-day Japan are summoned to become the saviors of the land, plagued by the relentless Waves of Catastrophe. Among them is Naofumi Iwatani, an otaku who's relegated to the role of the "Shield Hero" due to his lack of combat prowess and unassuming personality. Armed with a humble shield, Naofumi is met with scorn and ridicule from his fellow heroes and the kingdom's people, who view him as inferior.

Despite being shunned, Naofumi finds an unlikely ally in Malty Melromarc, who agrees to train with him. However, she betrays him, and Naofumi is falsely accused of taking advantage of her. As a result, he becomes the target of widespread discrimination and hatred, fueling his anger and sense of injustice. Seeking redemption and a chance to prove himself, Naofumi purchases a demi-human slave named Raphtalia, who's on the brink of death, and sets out on a journey to strengthen himself and clear his name.

As the Waves of Catastrophe loom closer, Naofumi and Raphtalia must band together to protect the kingdom and its people from the impending doom. With his new companion by his side, Naofumi embarks on a quest to redeem himself and reclaim his honor, facing numerous challenges and adversaries along the way.
